Coach of the month: Holger Boehme

Name:
Holger Boehme

Age:
51

Coaching at:
Golfschule Böhme, Dortmunder Golf Club, Germany

TrackMan User since:
2016

When and why did you start playing golf?
As a child, I worked as a Caddie in a golf club near Duesseldorf. I started to love this sport and started playing golf myself in 1993.

What was your HCP when you turned Pro?
I was never a real amateur. When I started my training as a teaching professional I had to play several rounds of 5 over Par. When I was young I played ice hockey in the second division, so professional sport has always been fun for me.

Which is your favorite golf course?
A difficult question. In my opinion, Monte Rei in Portugal is definitely one of the most beautiful golf courses in Europe. Worldwide, I would say the Emirates golf club in Dubai.

Do you have a favorite coach you follow and why?
I was lucky to work with Roland Becker for several years. He is definitely the best team coach I’ve ever experienced. Apart from him, Mike Adams with his biomechanics and interesting approaches towards the game has also been a very good coach for my game.

Who is your favorite player and why?
Tiger, of course! He revolutionized this sport. Bernhard Langer is the best professional golfer of all time for me. Anyone who has been at the top of the world for so many decades is something very special in the world of sports.

What is your best golf related achievement?
As a coach, my girl’s team and I became German Champions. Alternatively, I train my players and work with them to win national and international titles. My men’s team is currently playing in the second German division.

As a golf coach, what is the most common mistake among players that you notice?
Many players try to mimic the swing of some tour pros. Everyone has their own swing DNA. In principle, it is about improving the ball flight based on your own skillset and style of play.

What are your greatest professional strengths?
I think the most important thing in our job is to never stop learning. I try to train myself as much as possible. Every day with every student and every player.

What’s in your bag?
Driver: Mizuno ST 200
Wood 3: Mizuno ST200
Hybrid: Mizuno CLK
Iron: Mizuno Hot Metal Pro 4-PW
Wedges: Mizuno T20 50, 56, 60
Putter: Caledonia Vidi Vici

How often do you play golf yourself?
Unfortunately, I don‘t have much time to play golf. I try to train every free minute and do a few rounds a month. Unfortunately, I don‘t do it that often.

What has changed since you started working with a TrackMan?
A lot. The focus in my lessons is now much more on the ball flight and the moment of impact. The understanding of the influence of the face position and the swing path is now completely different. The video camera is actually needed by the student only, the data is enough for me.

Which is your favorite TrackMan feature, and why?
There are many very good things that keep helping me. A favorite is definitely the impact location. For the youth and the teams, it’s the test center. You can always work on the deficits here.
